چکیده

Fructose' is metabolized in Aerobacter aerogenes primarily through the pathway: fructose -fructose-1-P -. fructose-1,6-P. Previous evidence for this pathway was the detection of an inducible fructose-i-P kinase2, I and the demonstration that a mutant lacking frustose-6-P kinase grew well on fructose but not on glucose, whereas a mutant lacking fructose 1,6-diphosphatase grew on glucose but not on fructose.' How widespread the occurrence of this new pathway is has not yet been assessed; however, the pathway has recently been demonstrated in Escherichia coli4 and fructose-l-P kinase occurs in Bacteroides symbiosis.5 In the present communication, we report on the initial reaction in the fructose1-P pathway. We show that in A. aerogenes fructose is phosphorylated with PEP' specifically at carbon atom 1 by a phosphotransferase system of the type originally described by Kundig et al.6 for other sugars and which has subsequently been implicated in the transport of sugars into bacterial cells as well as in their phosphorylation.7-15

Catabolism of fructose and mannitol in Clostridium thermocellum: presence of phosphoenolpyruvate: fructose phosphotransferase, fructose 1-phosphate kinase, phosphoenolpyruvate: mannitol phosphotransferase, and mannitol 1-phosphate dehydrogenase in cell extracts.

Fructose and mannitol are fermented by Clostridium thermocellum in a medium containing salts and 0.5% yeast extract. The initial reaction in the catabolism of fructose was found to be the formation of fructose l-phosphate by phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP):fructose phosphotransferase which resembles the Kundig-Roseman phosphotransferase system. The phosphorylation of fructose l-phosphate to form fruc...

Pathway of L-sorbose metabolism in Aerobacter aerogenes.

The pathway of L-sorbose metabolism in Aerobacter aerogenes was determined to be: L-sorbose ---f L-sorbose l-phosphate ---f D-glucitol 6-phosphate -+ D-fructose 6-phosphate. Phosphorylation of L-sorbose at C-l is mediated by a phosphoenolpyruvate-dependent phosphotransferase system, whereas r,-sorbose l-phosphate reduction and D-glucitol 6-phosphate oxidation are mediated by pyridine-nucleotide...

Metabolism of D-fructose by Arthrobacter pyridinolis.

Previous studies showed that Arthrobacter pyridinolis can transport and utilize d-glucose only after prior growth on certain Krebs cycle intermediates. In contrast, we found that d-fructose was taken up and metabolized by A. pyridinolis without special prior conditions of growth. d-Fructose was first converted to d-fructose-1-phosphate by a phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP):D-fructose phosphotransferas...

Isolation and characterization of a pyrophosphate-dependent phosphofructokinase from Propionibacterium shermanii.

A pyrophosphate-dependent phosphofructokinase (pyrophosphate; D-fructose-6-phosphate-1-phosphotransferase) has been purified and characterized from extracts of Propionibacterium shermanii. The enzyme catalyzes the transfer of phosphate from pyrophosphate to fructose 6-phosphate to yield fructose-1,6-P2 and phosphate. This unique enzymatic activity was observed initially in Entamoeba histolytica...
